Presbyterian University-Ghana Honours Moderator As The First Chancellor Of The University

The Presbyterian University, Ghana (PUG) has honoured the Moderator of the General Assembly (Presbyterian Church of Ghana) Rt. Rev. Prof. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante as the first Chancellor of the university after the university was given a Presidential Charter status in August this 2022 by H.E Nana Akuffo Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Moderator was honoured as the first chancellor of the university during  the Unveiling of the Charter Monument by the university to officially name the university as 'Presbyterian University- Ghana' instead of 'Presbyterian University College'  in Kwahu Abetifi of  the Eastern region.

In 2013, the then Presbyterian University College applied for a Presidential Charter per the standard of the then National Accreditation Board (NAB) which permits any private tertiary institution to apply for presidential status after ten (10) years of its existence.

Ultimately, by April, 2022, Presbyterian University College, Ghana was named among Catholic University College, Ghana, and Methodist University College, Ghana as having qualified for the grant of the Charter Certificate by a publication on Graphic Online, and on 30th August, 2022, the President of the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo- Danquah Akuffo Addo, presented the Charter Certificate to the University at the Jubilee House in Accra.

Speaking during the unveiling  of the monument at Kwahu Abetifi, the Moderator who has now become the first Chancellor of the Presbyterian University Ghana said the college was able to attain Presidential Charter status through hard work by the leadership of the college including it affiliated universities such as Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST ), University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Ghana (UG) as well as the support of the Presbyterian Church.

"The Presbyterian Church of Ghana initiated tertiary education in this country about a 175 years ago with Akropong College of Education, the establishment of educational institutions falls under the social witness of the church, the establishment of schools is to create space for young men and women to acquire holistic knowledge training of the head , hands and the heart and secondly to create an environment for training and exercise of the christian faith, we intentionally establish these institutions as an extension of our faith simply put we do education because God wants us to do it"

"After operating this institution for over a century in collaboration with the government the church in the spirit of the time decided to establish another private university that will be wholely own by the church, it will interest you to know that the chiefs and people in Kwahu traditional area have always been keen in hosting the proposed university of the church , I vividly recall as I said at once seen at the church  that they physical carried money in a bag to present to the church for the establishment of the university on their land,
Toady the Presbyterian Church of Ghana operates seven tertiary institutions made up of five colleges of education and two  universities, the two universities  both private are fully chartered and accredited I mean the Akrofi Crystalize Institute of Theology Mission and Culture to run post graduate programs and now the Presbyterian University Ghana to run both undergraduate and post graduate programs" he said.

According to the Chancellor/ Moderator, this is the time that all Presbyterians in Ghana and abroad come together to support the university financially and through their technical and knowledge know-how to help lift the university to a higher enrollment status and to build a vibrant and strong faculty.

He reiterated by saying that "the university aims at training and producing graduates in a more holistic approach to ensure that the right caliber of graduates are produced for the country to restore the lost dignity of good ethics in our work places and society which has led to many corrupt practices in Ghana , therefore I will urge parents to enroll their wards in  Presbyterian University, Ghana to enjoy the full benefit of the university".

Meanwhile the President of Presbyterian University, Ghana Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu believes that the appointment of the current Moderator as the first chancellor of the university will help put  the university to a higher status and make it one of the best universities in Ghana.

Regarding challenges faced by privates universities , he highlighted that government support to private universities is minimal hence more needs to be done to support private universities in Ghana.

He also reiterated that the university is open to  individuals who are ready to learn, be morally cultured, and trained but does not  necessarily target first class students only.
