People Are Losing Their Lives; Galamsey Lands Must Be Reclaimed - NAELP

Government is committed to reclaiming lands destroyed by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey according to the Coordinator for National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), Dr. Mrs.Louise Carol Serwaa.

Madam Donkor, interacting with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', explained the reclamation exercise is only at sites that have been mined out to ensure they are not destroyed again.

"We are currently engaged in a lot of land reclamation in most of these communities. We are reclaiming the lands close to the rivers and those ones that are mined out," she said.

According to her, "land reclamation is not just about covering the holes dug by the galamseyers. It’s a whole scientific process".

"People are losing their lives in most of the pits in the galamsey sites and so if nothing is done, the consequences will be dire. Our focus is saving lives," she added.
