The late Lepowura Alhaji Mohamadu Nurudeen Jawula was the former Ghana Football Association’s president from 1997 to 2001 and former running mate aspirant/hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the former Chief Director of Ports and Harbours, the former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, the former Director of the ministry of Finance and a Board Member for several Boards including the Cocoa Board, the Shippers Council, and many others.
Alhaji Jawula as popularly referred to passed on in the United States of America on 21st of January,2023, after a short illness at the age of 73. He was born on 3rd May 1949 in Accra in the Greater Accra region of Ghana and began his secondary education at the Tamale Secondary School completing in 1966 and furthered at the Marling School, Stroud Glos, England in 1968, the University of Cape Coast in 1972 the University of Ghana in 1974 and 2010
In pursuit of continues academic excellence, Alhaji Jawula proceeded to the University of Cape Coast in 1972 for BA (ED), University of Ghana, Legon for MA in African Studies in the year 1974 and later to the University of Ghana, Legon in 2010 for MA in Social Policy. Alhaji Jawula served in various capacities both public and private in the interest of the nation, rising through the ranks and contributing immensely in national development at every level of his professional engagement.
He began his career as a tutor at the Tamale Secondary School from 1972 to 1974 where he later became the Head of the Economic Department of the school. Alhaji Jawula later served as Assistant Secretary at the East Dagomba district council in Yendi between 1976 to 1978 and was appointed as the District Chief Executive in Walewale between 1979 to 1980 then as District Chief Executive for West Mamprusi District Council. 2nd March, 2023
Working as Deputy Director of Administration at the Ministry of Finance from 2000 to 2003, Alhaji Jawula was active in the preparation of the National Budget, providing logistics and statistics.
In 2003 he moved to become the Chief Director for the Ministry of Harbours & Railways, serving on the Board of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and was instrumental in the quarry expansion of the Ports of Tema and Takoradi which allowed bigger ships to sail through the Harbour of Tema and for Takoradi to be an export harbour for Cocoa and Oil until 2006.
Based on his managerial and administrative capacity and experiences over the years, he facilitated policy initiation, direction and implementation for the Ministry of Health including the negotiations of the single spine salary which turned around the level of remuneration to health workers in his capacity as Chief Director 2006 to 2008. He facilitated working relationships with all our Development Partners i.e., USAID, DANIDA, and DEFID among others.
Alhaji Jawula was the Consulting Director for the Otumfuo Centre for Traditional Leadership, UPSA from 2014 to 2019. Coordinates with the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the University of Professional Studies on academic affairs of the Centre. He provided leadership training, technical support and guidance to staff to ensure OCTL’S goals are met.
The final Adua rites will be held at the forecourt of the State House, Accra on 4th March,2023 at 10 am prompt. Alhaji Jawula was married with 10 children
