Kejetia Market Fire Outbreak: No Casualties Recorded

No casualties have been recorded in the fire that gutted the Kejetia Central Market in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Wednesday, destroying many items and shops.

About 50 shops were reported to have been razed by the fire outbreak.

Although the cause of the fire remains sketchy, it is however said that some inflammable items might have stoked the fire.

Hello FM's Samson Kwame Nyamekye has confirmed that no trader nor commuter lost his or her life during the fire outbreak.

"I can confirm 100% that there were no casualties . . . I presently have report that no death has been recorded," he told Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show.

He, however, stated that he cannot affirm that, "there were no injuries", explaining that due to the heavy flames, some traders being rescued by the personnel from the emergency services using a rope couldn't have a smooth landing, therefore it is possible some sustained minor injuries.

He also disclosed that over eight thousand (8000) shops at Kejetia market used a single meter since its completion in December 2018.

The market has been shut temporarily for an assessment of the extent of damage caused to the facility in Wednesday’s fire.
