NACOC Explains Why They Burned Marijuana Valued At GH¢ 50 Million
The Narcotics Control Commission ((NACOC) has disclosed why they burn marijuana which found in the possession of individuals.
The Commission on February 9, 2023, announced that it destroyed about 50 tonnes of seized marijuana at the Bundase Military Camp in the Greater Accra Region worth GH¢ 50 million.
The acting Director of Public Relations Officer at NACOC, Francis Opoku Amoah has justified the burning of marijuana (wee) stressing the growing and/or consumption of marijuana remains illegal.
Replying Kwami Sefa Kayi in an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" programme on why NACOC is not utilizing marijuana like other countries which are reaping huge revenues from its trade, Mr. Opoku Amoah explained that the product contains high Total Active Cannabinoids (TAC) which is not permitted in the country.
"When you look at our laws, the Narcotics Control Commission Act (Section 39), it states that the growing and consumption of wee is against the law. So, our laws currently frowns on the possession of wee. The law hasn't permitted any person to possess, grow, trade in or consume marijuana . . . the ones that we burn are those ones with recreational purposes that contain high T.A.C," he responded.
Total Active Cannabinoids (TAC) refers to the total amount of cannabinoids that can be detected in a cannabis product.
He insisted that in our laws every person in the nation is strictly prohibited from trading or consuming marijuana and for that matter, when seized, will be destroyed.
