Ecobank Adopts, Sponsors Maiden Edition of Fanous Ramadan Ritual

Ecobank Ghana has announced the adoption and sponsoring of the Fanous Ramadan as an annual ritual, starting from 2023 to light up some streets of the Muslim communities to mark the celebration of the holy month of Ramadan.

Street lighting during the holy month of Ramadan, traditionally referred to as Fanous Ramadan, has been practised in Egypt and the larger Arab world for ages.

The practice today has become very common and observed in Muslim communities in most parts of the world, including the West.

Addressing the media on behalf of the Managing Director of Ecobank Ghana Mr Dan Sackey, the Head of Corporate Banking at Ecobank Mr Johnson Oware said at the first-ever Ramadan edition of Light Up the City 2023 that the Fanous has remained with Muslims as a symbol of joy and a beloved tradition in the month of Ramadan.

Mr Johnson Oware noted that Ecobank has been at the forefront of street lighting during the festive seasons of Christmas and New Year since 2018 as the pioneer sponsor of the event.

He said it has become necessary for Ecobank Ghana to adopt and sponsor Fanous Ramadan as the bank’s immediate customers and employees comprise largely both Christians and Muslims in the country.

“As you may know by now, Ecobank has been at the forefront of street lighting during the festive seasons of Christmas and new year, since 2018, as the pioneer sponsor of the event. Realising that our immediate stakeholders, i.e., our customers and our employees, comprise largely Christians and Muslims, we have found it necessary to adopt Fanous Ramadan as an annual ritual, starting from 2023”, he noted.

He pointed out that Ecobank Ghana sponsored the Fanous Ramadan as a corporate social responsibility aimed at bringing joy and smiles to the faces of all Muslims in the country.

He however pleaded with Ghanaian Muslims not to let these efforts of the Ramadan lighting be in vain but to achieve its real purpose of making the “light guide the way for all us, now and forever”.

He, therefore, prayed for Allah’s blessings for all Muslims and their families with great joy, happiness and prosperity as they mark the end of Eid Mubarak.

The first-ever Ramadan edition of Light Up the City 2023 was organized under the authority and backing of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and its local authorities, namely the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly and Jandel Limited (a Décor, Luxury and Lifestyle Experience Company) and sponsored solely by Ecobank Ghana.

The Ecobank-sponsored Fanous Ramadan lighting ceremony took place in Accra Nima Roundabout and the Northern Regional capital of Tamale simultaneously last Friday, April 21 2023.
