NPP Presidential Primary: No Law Compels Bawumia To Resign As Veep - Spokesperson Replies Critics

Dr. Gideon Boako has replied the aspirants in the New Patriotic Party's presidential race who say Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia must resign to contest the race.

The critics have rebuked the Vice President because, to them, he is using work hours to conduct his campaign.

They argue that Dr. Bawumia must lay down his tools like his competitors have done in their pursuit to winning the flagbearership contest.

But addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' show, Dr. Gideon Boako said emphatically that there is no law nor regulation in the party's constitution that compels Dr. Bawumia to resign to make him eligible to contest the party's presidential primary.

"I haven't sighted any regulation like that and also he is not the first person who is a sitting Vice President and contesting an election like this. Professor Mills was a sitting Vice President when he contested; he didn't resign. Mr. Aliu Mahama was a sitting Vice President when he contested; he didn't resign. Mr. Mahama contested as President; he didn't resign. So, Bawumia is not the first," he argued.

He added that the Ministers who have resigned to pursue their political dream of becoming President of Ghana did so on their own terms but not that any law mandated them to resign.

He stressed "based on convention and practice, nothing compels Bawumia to resign".
