The former president John Mahama has described the death of James Lutterodt, a member of the Keta Senior High Technical School (Ketasco) team that competed in the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) in 2021, as heartbreaking.

Lutterodt reportedly died on Monday (3 July 2023) from food poisoning.

He was said to be studying computer science at the University of Ghana and arrangements were under way for him to pursue further studies abroad.

The extraordinary journey of Lutterodt in the NSMQ captivated viewers across the country.

In addition to earning him personal accolades, his accomplishments in the competition brought his school and the whole Volta Region a great deal of prestige.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday (4 July), Mahama said of Lutterodt’s passing: “Sad to hear about the death of James Lutterodt, a former student of Keta SHS.

“We all fondly recall the sterling performance of James and his colleagues in the NSMQ in 2021. Even though they did not win the ultimate prize, it was such a joy to watch the trio from Ketasco.
“Our hearts go out to his parents, family, friends and schoolmates. You are not alone during this difficult time. James will always hold a special place in our hearts. His passing at such a young age is truly heartbreaking,” Mahama wrote on Facebook.
