Ghana Needs A Female Running Mate - FIDA Tells NPP, NDC

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana) has expressed their bitter feelings over the neglect of women in leading political roles in Ghana.

The women lawyers, speaking in an interview on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, advocated the need and significance of having a female as Running Mate to the presidential candidates of the political parties, particularly the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress.

They believe it is about time a female was considered for such position, stressing women in leadership roles contribute largely to national development.

They argued that due to the less number of women in leadership roles in the politics of Ghana, most of the needs of women have been abandoned but should a woman be chosen as Running Mate, she will address the numerous challenges bedeviling females and also become a beacon of hope to young women.

"Voting is not peculiar to men alone. We are all equal citizens. So, why can't we open up and give both men and women the same opportunities?", one of the panelists who spoke for FIDA-Ghana highlighted.

Another explained their quest for a female Running Mate is to negate historical accounts regarding women not considered for high offices.

"When you take US, it took them 200 years to get a female Running Mate or a woman who is currently their Vice President. We won't sit down for it to be 200 years before we choose a woman as Running Mate; we have to speak out", the women admonished the leaders of the main political parties in the country.
