Spintex Road Car Snatchers Grabbed

AFTER SUCCEEDING in snatching eight cars from their owners on the Spintex road and at Sakumono, the Accra Regional Police Command has finally arrested three men behind the act. They include Bernard Asare, 30, Prince Amihere, 28 and Nana Yaw Opoku, 29. Five out of the eight cars have however been retrieved from the suspects by the police. The vehicles, some of whose original numbers plates had been removed, included two Toyota Camry vehicles, a Toyota Tacoma, an Audi A4, and a VW Passat. Briefing the Daily Guide, the Accra Regional Crime Officer Superintendent, Frank Adufati, indicated that between February and March 2011, there had been reports of a car snatching syndicate operating around the Spintex Road and Sakumono. On July 14 this year, the police received information that one of the missing vehicles had been seen at Odorkor being driven by Bernard Asare. He was consequently arrested by the regional police when he was found driving the VW Passat that fateful day. Upon interrogation, suspect Bernard mentioned Prince Amihere and Nana Yaw Opoku as the persons who sold the vehicle to him at a cost of GH6500. He later assisted the police to retrieve another vehicle allegedly sold to him at Tesano near De Georgia Motors. On July 15, police arrested Prince Amihere and Nana Yaw at Latebiokoshie and Dansoman respectively. Based upon interrogation, it was detected that Nana Yaw, after snatching the vehicle at gun point, supplied it to suspect Prince Amihere to sell them to the public. So far, five of the stolen vehicles have been retrieved by the police. The police are however on the lookout for the remaining three, the Regional Crime Officer said. He urged victims whose vehicles have been snatched at Sakumono and Spintex road but had not found them yet to report at the Accra Regional Police Command to identify them. Nana Yaw, according to information available to the paper, is standing trial at the Osu Magistrate Court for procession of firearm without authority but has been granted bail by the court since November last year. In December last year while on bail, he was re-arrested by the police for attempting to snatch a vehicle from its owner at gun point but was again granted bail by the Cocoa Affairs Court. This is the third time he has been arrested. He would be put before court soon.
