Newmont Starts Deep Mining

The Ahafo Mine of Newmont Ghana at Kenyasi in Asutifi District of the Brong Ahafo Region, will by 2013-2014 commence Underground Mining Project at its Subika mine site. According to Agbeko Azumah, Communication Manager of Ahafo Mines, Newmont Ghana had sent a draft Environmental Impact Statement to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its endorsement to execute the underground project, by the said date. He stated that the company would, as a matter of policy, continue to focus on safe production and responsible mining through its social and environmental practices. Mr. Azumah disclosed this when an-18 member group of Journalists for Business Advocacy toured the Newmont Ahafo mining site to acquaint itself with operations of the company. Mr. Azumah, a former journalist of the Ghanaian Times, noted that prudent practices and environmental measures that the company upheld would be used in the management of the Subika Project. He gave the assurance that Newmont Ghana had also created a range of policies and procedures to resettle and compensate people for losses suffered. He added that its Ahafo Subika Underground Project would contribute significantly to the company�s strategic goal to produce seven million ounces of gold globally by 2017. Giving a brief background to the company, Mr. Azumah alia Zupee, said it was �established in 1921 by Colonel Boyce Thompson Newmont�s Global Headquarters in Denver, Colorado USA. �It operates in 5 continents with its African Regional Headquarters in Accra, Ghana. The company employs approximately 34,000 people globally.� The company�s vision is to �be the most valued and respected mining company through industry-leading performance.� Whiles its mission is to �build a sustainable mining business that delivers top quartile shareholder returns while leading in safety, environmental and social responsibility.� The four operational pits the company holds at the Ahafo mines are Apensu � 2006; Subika � mid 2006; Awonsu � March 2008; Amoma � July 2010. From 2006-2011, the company has paid a total of $62m royalties to the Government, and according to Mr. Azumah, Newmont�s annual Gold Production is 500 � 550 Koz.
