DFP Supports Engagement With NDC

The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), has declared its support for the purported engagement between its national leadership and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as a matter of principle. It said: In politics where nomination of candidates for the legislature is mediated through electoral competition with other parties, certain structural styles do emerge. These were contained in a statement signed by Barima Yaw Osafo-Kantanka, Regional Chairman of the DFP, and copied to GNA at Koforidua on Friday. It said the sort of engagement taking place between the NDC and the DFP was necessary. The statement said: The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) had that type of electoral engagement with each other that enabled the CPP to win three Constituencies thus Komenda, Eguafo and Edina in the Central Region. It noted that in those constituencies subject to the terms of the engagement, the NPP did not present candidates but advised its members to vote for the candidates of the CPP. The statement said During the 2008 General Elections, Bambatas Revolutionary Democrat, a breakaway faction of the NPP also supported the NDC, whilst the DFP, another breakaway group from the NDC also had an electoral alliance with the NPP during the Presidential Run-off. It noted that the purported engagement between the NDC and the DFP was a normal adjustment process that takes place between political parties in competitions, especially when the electoral calendar draws near. The statement assured the rank and file of the DFP in the Region that the National Executive Committee would soon throw light on modalities for the engagement for it to take an informed decision.
