FONKAR Will Determine Who Wins 2012 Elections

Members of the Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings (FONKAR), say they believe they will determine who wins the next national elections slated for December 7, 2012. The group believes that given the cliff-hanger outcome of the 2008 elections, coupled with the happenings in government, there is no guarantee that President J.E.A. Mills can retain the slim 40,000 votes with which he won the presidency. Leading member of FONKAR, Mr Ernest Owusu Bempah, told Joy FM that having been ridiculed by the government in the run-up to the governing National Democratic Congress' delegates congress to elect a flag-bearer for elections 2012, the group would demonstrate why its strength must not be measured by Mrs Rawlings abysmal performance in the election which government spokespersons are wont to point to in order to minimize the influence of the former first family in the NDC in particular and Ghana politics in general. They are making [mockery] of the fact that we got 3.1 per cent. We are going to hold on to it and make use of it in 2012. Lets not forget that we have a president who won election 2008 with only 40,000 votes and if they are smart politicians they will not be calling on discredited journalists toput out publications to malign leading members of FONKAR and leading members of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings campaign team and insult them here and there, he stated. Lets not forget that we have majority of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings supporters who were not delegates but they vote in the national elections and we have massive support on our back majority of who are registered voters and we will show them where our vote will be in 2012, he threatened. Mr Bempah said it was regrettable that some members of the NDC sought to use the former first ladys poor showing to belittle the significance of Mr Rawlings and his wife in the NDC. The despicable denigration and humiliation suffered by the founder and his wife at the hands of NDC supporters, he maintained, was orchestrated by some executives of the party, who were now calling for unity. He dismissed calls by the leadership of the party for a ban on FONKAR, GAME, OLONKA, and other splinter groups. According to him, FONKAR existed long before the presidential primary and cannot be disbanded simply because the contest is over. With such utterances, some political watchers believe the former first lady who is currently embarking on a thank you tour, is considering running for president in 2012 probably as an independent candidate. Sections of the media have quoted aide to the Rawlingses, Mr Kofi Adams as saying the electorate should not be surprised to see some new names on the ballot paper in 2012. He would not clarify the statement except to say that anything can happen from now to the election day in 2012, he is quoted by the Daily Guide newspaper.
