Konadu Urged To Run For Presidency

If the former first lady of the NDC, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is inspired to compete for the leadership of the country in 2012, even after losing massively to President Mills at the July NDC national congress, she can be sure that her supporters and sympathizers would not forsake her. Amidst the current brewing storm, surrounding the NDCs decision to dissolve FONKAR, one of the key campaign groups of the Rawlings faction, another emerging support bloc has pledge their full backing, should Mrs. Rawlings decide to contest in next years presidential election. Adiza Abubakar, leader for the Zongo Women for Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings for 2012 in Kumasi has declared that the group is prepared to throw their full support behind the former leading lady if she decides to seek the presidency independently. Speaking to Shamima Muslim, host of Citi FMs Eye Witness News, the group leader said that just because Nana Konadu did not win at the congress does not mean she is not a winner. "We still believe in her and we want her to know that we give her our full support just in case she wants to come out. We cannot force her but if she wants to run for president we will support her. The Kumasi-based group, which according to Miss Abubakar, is estimated to have over a 100 members, has expressed dissatisfaction at what they term unfair treatment of Nana Konadu by members of the party during the goings-on of the NDC congress The Zongo Women for Nana Konadu 2012 are not, apparently, the only ones disgruntled at the supposed unfair treatment meted out by some elements of the NDC. FONKAR has accused the NDC of intimidating its members in attempt to destroy the legacy of the Rawlingses. The Rawlings support-base say if the harassment and intimidation continues, they will not hesitate to campaign and vote against President Mills in the coming elections. At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday August 16, leading members of FONKAR described as flawed the directive from the NDC General-Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia asking all pressure groups within the party to be dissolved. The Director of Operations of FONKAR, Ernest Owusu- Bempah after the conference, told Citi News that FONKAR will not give in to acts of intimidation from any quarters of the NDC. The problem is the fact that certain things have been going on after the congress. "We are a united people who have a common goal to win an election but here is the case where some people are trying to destroy what Jerry-John and his wife, for a long time now, have struggled to put down. It is clear that intimidation has become the order of the day. "Just recently, three of our members were arrested; arbitrary arrest, violation of human rights and the abuse of incumbency by the Mills administration is all clear. "If you want to go into an election year, after congress, which you won by 40,000 votes and you want to split supporters of the founding members of the party, then Im sorry, it wont happen.
