Confusion At Asawase NDC

THE NATIONAL Democratic Congress (NDC) has been hit by confusion at its Kumasi stronghold of Asawase constituency which could have adverse effects on its chances of retaining political power in 2012. The situation has emerged following the alleged misbehavior of Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed and KMA boss, Samuel Sarpong. It is alleged that the two personalities instructed some security personnel of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to pull down a fence wall being erected on a vast plot of land owned by a known NDC financier in the community. Owner of the said plot situated at Sawaba, Alhaji Amuda Madugu is said to have contributed greatly in the NDCs 2008 general elections victory. The alleged decision by Mr. Mubarak and the KMA boss to order people to forcibly pull down the fence wall is said to have angered some macho men who are known NDC members with strong ties to Alhaji Madugu. When Daily Guide visited the scene on Tuesday, the angry-looking NDC goons had gathered in large numbers singing war songs and vowing to cause mayhem if the two men set foot in the area again. They noted that Alhaji Madugu should not be treated in that manner by his own party members after wasting his resources to help the NDC kick the NPP out of power in 2008. When contacted, Alhaji Madugu who is participating in the ongoing annual Ramadan fast said he purchased the land from one Mrs. Jeradine Ike. He added that he had already paid GH50,000 (500 million old cedis) for it and is yet to settle the remaining 1.5 billion old cedis within the next three months. He told the paper the land owner had given him permission to construct the wall upon making the initial amount some months ago. Alhaji Madugu said about a week ago, his men were making cement blocks on the land when some KMA security personnel came and seized some of their cement and the block making machine they were working with. He noted that he went to the KMA the following day with some elders of the community and the items were released to him immediately to continue with the construction work. However when his men resumed work on the land a day later, a KMA pickup loaded with about twelve men came to the scene and stopped them from working. Alhaji Madugu said on Tuesday he was sleeping during the afternoon when he was informed that some KMA personnel led by the two state officials had once again stormed the land to cause commotion. According to him, the KMA personnel dismantled his block making machines, pulled down the wall and went away. He alleged that the MP had taken that action because he was afraid of losing more votes during the NDCs upcoming parliamentary primaries in the Asawase constituency after failing to honor a promise he made to the sawaba community which is part of his constituency. He claimed Mr. Muntaka promised to buy the land in question for the Sawaba community but had been unable to do so for almost a year now. He vowed to take the matter to court for proper redress, saying that he had had enough of the Muntakas attacks.
