Pregnant Sheep Thief Jailed

A TAMALE District Magistrate Court 2 presided over by Augustine Essah yesterday sentenced a 32-year-old notorious thief, Nurudeen Fuseini Toro, to two years imprisonment in hard labour. The suspect, who plies his trade between Tampion and Savelugu in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern Region, was arrested and handed over to the Tamale Police for stealing a pregnant sheep. According to the facts of the case, prosecution indicated that the convict specialized in stealing goats and sheep of his neighbours within the two localities. His numerous nefarious activities were however brought to a halt early Friday morning when he was caught red-handed with a pregnant sheep. Toro was said to have stolen the animal from Savelugu, and as usual was hiding near some bushes in the area, awaiting a vehicle to board to Tamale so he could sell the animal. Abubakari Ibrahim, a butcher from Savelugu who knew the suspect and was aware of his dubious activities, saw Toro and feigned interest in buying the animal for his business. After minutes of negotiations, they agreed on a price but Abubakari Ibrahim asked Toro to go with him in his vehicle to his home so he could pay him. Toro readily obliged and hopped into the vehicle but instead of heading to Savelugu, the driver drove straight to the Tamale Police Station, where he handed the suspect over to the police. Realizing hed been caught, the suspect started pleading for mercy after admitting he committed the offence in his caution statement. Toro was arraigned before court early Tuesday on charges of stealing contrary to section 124(1) of the criminal offences act 29/60, and was sentenced accordingly after admitting the offence.
