Samia Welcomes Sekou's Resignation

New chairperson of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Samia Yaba Nkrumah has commended her brother, Sekou Nkrumah for taking the initiative to resign from his party, the National Democratic Congress. Dr. Sekou Nkrumah announced his resignation from the NDC, Tuesday September 13, based on the rationale that his affiliation with the ruling party will pose as an obstacle to his sisters new political role. Dr. Sekou Nkrumah, who confirmed his exit from the NDC on the Citi on Tuesday was seen at the congress grounds of the CPP on Saturday. He said his resignation from the NDC also became imminent since his role in the NDC has become somewhat insignificant. Sekou Nkrumah was dismissed as the Coordinator of the National Youth Council of the NDC over a year ago after he launched a scathing attack on President Mills labelling him as a weak leader. In an interview, Samia Nkrumah claimed that although the news of the resignation came as a total surprise to her, she is appreciative of the decision as it implied some form of support from her brother. As to whether or not she intends to persuade Sekou Nkrumah to join forces with her during her tenure as Chairman of the CPP, towards the coming general elections, she said perhaps, but I am not putting pressure now, we are at the beginning stages of reorganizing and I have no doubts that many will join us from the two main parties as we progress. She maintained that political differences will not damage their relationship and wished him well in future endeavours. Samia Nkrumah also said that the key to a successful economic growth in the country was to create and allow a fair distribution of opportunities to all. This is what we stand for and this is what will yield the Kwame Nkrumah development plans; how we can create the environment so that every Ghanaian, irrespective of gender, religious, political affiliation, can have the opportunity to do something worthwhile. This is what we hope to achieve.
