Three Dominican Sisters Leave Ghana

Three of the remaining five Dominican sisters who until recently ran the St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia have left Ghana for Speyer, Germany, for good. They included two of the first group of three sisters who arrived in Ghana in May 1960 to establish the hospital that had grown to be the largest mission hospital in the country. The two founding members were Sister Fatima Schmitt and Sister Theresita Ohmer with the third being Sister Wiltrud Vogel who joined the hospital in September, 1982. The last two of the sisters, Sister Miguelar Keller who had been with the hospital since June 1963 and Sister Lucaris Schaedler who joined the Dominican team in 1962 are expected to leave Ghana at the end of the month. The Dominican Sisters last month handed over the administration of the hospital to the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua after running it for 51 years at a farewell ceremony at Akwatia. They were highly praised by speaker after speaker for their selfless service to Ghana. Before their departure, the three sisters paid a farewell call on the Akwatiahene, Osabarima Kofi Boateng III. He said Ghanaians in general and the people of Akwatia in particular were profoundly grateful for their great missionary, humanitarian and dedicated work which brought healing to thousands of patients. Sister Vogel thanked the chiefs and people of Akwatia for their hospitality and the support they had that enabled them to achieve their aim.
