AMA Extends Time For Truck Pushers' Registration

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has postponed the deadline for the registration of push trucks in the capital to October 1st.This is to enable the push truck association register the rest of its members who are yet to do so with the assembly. The AMAs earlier deadline was Thursday, September 15 but the association pleaded for an extension which has been granted. The assembly placed a ban on the movement of push trucks on some selected streets in Accra as well as the registration of all push trucks in the central business district. The Public Relations Officer of the Ama, Nummo Blafoe III, who spoke to Citi News after a meeting with the association members, said the extension was based largely on the concerns of the truck pushers. Originally the deadline was supposed to 15th September, but they requested for some time because they had not educated enough on the registration. Furthermore, at the beginning, they were to pay 12 Ghana cedis for the yearly rate and an extra ten cedis for the number plates. "They said that it was rather on the high side, so we considered their concerns and decided to extend the time to the end of the September. "We have agreed to maintain the yearly rate at 12 Ghana cedis but we will issue the number plates for free. Meanwhile, the push truck association has said that although its members will abide by the new, by-law, it does not want to be coerced by the AMA. The chairman of the association, Abdulai Rahamani asked AMA to be gentle in their dealings with the truck pushers as many of them did not understand the rules and regulations.
