Mrs Joy Animah Debrah, a Senior Public Education officer at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), on Monday reiterated the Commission�s call on teachers to �drop the cane� in the school environment. She said the continuous use of the cane in the school environment imprints on the minds of children that violence was the best way to resolve issues. Mrs Debrah made the call at a two-day workshop in Ho for patrons of human rights clubs in the Volta and Eastern regions. She said some monitoring done by CHAJ revealed that many teachers remained glued to the use of canes and urged head-teachers to counsel their staff to discontinue the use of canes in the school environment. Mrs Debrah said teachers must use other ways of disciplining their pupils �Children are growing and we must help them to grow properly,� she said. Mrs Debrah also advised teachers and parents to desist from abusing children verbally. Mr Joseph Nuertey, Volta Regional Director of CHRAJ, urged participants to respect and protect the rights of children at school. He said they should identify human and child rights violations at schools and address or refer them to the appropriate authorities for redress.
