Group In Volta Vows To Resist Attempt To Denigrate Rawlings

A group of mainly National Democratic Congress (NDC) members, but wanting to be referred to as Concerned Volta Citizens, has said it would resist any more attempts to denigrate ex-President Jerry John Rawlings. The group, in a statement read to journalists on Tuesday, referred particularly to supposed attempts to alter the historical links of the ex-President with the NDC as its founder. Mr George Kportorwu, a Former Deputy Volta Regional Youth Organizer of the NDC and Mr Winfred Agbemakplido, a Former Ho-Central Constituency Chairman of the party, signed the two-page statement. It said ex-President Rawlings could not be extricated from NDC as it was his ideals that formed the bedrock of the Party. The statement said ex-President Rawlings had made a lot of sacrifices towards the sustenance of the NDC and in fact was profoundly helpful in winning the 2008 elections and should never be maligned. It called on well-meaning members of the Party (NDC) to condemn the negative statements made against the ex-President by some prominent members of the party and rally people for the party, rather than creating forums for negative discussions, which would adversely affect the fortunes of the Party.
