President Mills Assures Hospitals Of Logistical Aid

The President of Ghana John Evans Atta Mills has pledged governments support to the various hospitals who have been asked to step in and take up the excess load of patients due to the strike by doctors in the public sector. Describing the developments as unfortunate, President Mills said government will do everything possible to reduce the emergency at hand by providing the various hospitals identified with the necessary equipment to work well. The Police Hospital, 37 Military and various Garrison Hospitals across the country have been asked to attend to patients who have been turned away from public hospitals. During his extended Greater Accra regional tour on Wednesday, Professor Mills paid visits to the 37 Military and the Police hospitals where he expressed governments appreciation to the workers and doctors on duty for their service to the nation. The president promised to ensure that they are well equipped to handle the current challenges. Speaking at the Police Hospital, President Mills said, we know the additional strain that we are putting on your resources, but I want to promise you that as government, we will make sure that we will give you the necessary support and encouragement. This has come out of the blue but we would live up to the challenge and make sure that your burden is lessened in an appreciable way, so thank you to all your staff for living up to expectation and accepting that challenge and we will assist you to make it through, he said. Meanwhile, the Director of Medical Services at the Police Hospital DCOP Dr. Godfred Asiamah, said the hospital has stepped up its activities to be able to keep up with the pressures. Briefing the president, Dr. Asiamah indicated that we have put in measures to mitigate the effect of the strike action. When we come to staffing, we have recalled all our students from the training schools to support our staff. We have recalled some of our retired health workers who are strong enough to work with us. On the state of beds, we only have one hundred beds and we have managed to squeeze 50 additional beds, increasing the number of beds to 150.
