Kuffour Blames May 9 Disaster On Kotoko Supporters

Asante Kotoko fans are responsible for the infamous stadium disaster which claimed 126 lives on May 9, 2001 according to their ex captain Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour. The sad event occurred during a league clash between Kotoko and age-old rivals Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium currently stands as the worst sporting disaster on the African continent. And Kuffour who was then Hearts leading striker says the radical conduct of Kotoko fans formed the basis for the disaster. The behavior of the Kotoko fans brought about the incident. They started it all. Kuffour told Joy Sports. A lot of the Kotoko fans are students and that kind of radical behaviour was fully exhibited on that day. Talks of the May 9 disaster has been reignited following shameful acts of hooliganism displayed by some fans clad in red during the recent game played between the two sides. Authorities have been urged to institute a full enquiry into the incident that occurred on November 20 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
