Workers In Upper West Give Govt Up To End of January To Restore Subsidy On Fuel

Public sector workers in the Upper West Region have given government up to the end of January to either restore subsidies on petroleum products or they would advice themselves. Representatives of all the local unions within the Wa Municipality in a communiqu submitted to government through the Secretary-General of TUC, the workers noted that National Petroleum Authority increased prices of petroleum products between 15 per cent and 30 percent within last year alone while government increase salary by only 20 percent. The statement said the increase in prices of fuel had brought hardship to them and appealed to government to restore the subsidies to help alleviate further hardships on them and their family members who depended on them for survival. The workers warned that they would resist what they described as International Monetary Fund (IMF) imposition on government to withdraw subsidies on petroleum products. We kick against the manner in which fuel prices are determined and announced in the country without consultations with the social partners. The workers gave their unflinching support to the Steering Committee of the Ghana Trades Union press statement on the fuel increases slapped on the workers.
