Court bailiffs, with support from the police, have seized two vehicles belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in Kumasi for the non-payment of a liability of GH�22,300 imposed on the company in a case of illegal disconnection of power to a customer.
The Nissan pick-up vehicles, with registration numbers ER 3303-11 and GT 928 Y, were seized from the ECG�s offices at the Airport Roundabout in Kumasi on Wednesday and handed over to auctioneers to sell to pay for the liability due the customer.
In 2007, the Proprietor of the Oxford International School at Amakom in Kumasi, Nana Kwame Boateng, sued the ECG at the High Court for illegal disconnection of electricity to his residence and won damages in the said amount.
In the suit, Nana Boateng, who is also a royal of Asante Asokore, said he consistently paid his electricity bills to the company.
However, in his absence, officials of the ECG went to his house to disconnect power supply, even though all records at their office showed he had paid his bills.
Nana Boateng stated that the officials would not listen to explanations given them by caretakers of the house that he did not owe the ECG.After successfully arguing his case at the High Court, he was granted the damages.
However, the ECG filed an appeal but the Court of Appeal in Kumasi upheld the decision of the High Court.In spite of the outcome of the case, the ECG failed to pay the damages.Consequently, two of ECG�s vehicles were seized and handed over to auctioneers for the necessary action.
When contacted, the Ashanti Regional Public Affairs Manager of the ECG, Mr Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, said the company�s lawyers in Accra had been informed of the development.
He said efforts were being made to reach a compromise with Nana Boateng for the return of the vehicles.
