Two Trapped To Death

Two persons died, while four were seriously injured when an uncompleted church building collapsed on a wooden structure in which they were sleeping at Abonko in Tema Newtown. The bodies of the deceased, Maame Adwoa, six, and Ebo Quansah, 52, have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary, while the injured are receiving medical attention. Narrating the incident to the Daily Graphic, the Tema Regional Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Mr Timothy Osafo Affum, said the station had a distress call at about 5 a.m. yesterday, alerting them of the disaster. He said the fire personnel responded immediately but on reaching the scene, they discovered that the incident actually occurred about 4 a.m. According to Mr Osafo Affum, those who died were still trapped under the wooden structure, while the injured had been sent to hospital for attention. Mr Affum said the church building, a property of the Gospel Teaching Ministry, might have been weak at the foundation level, leading to its collapse. He said the area was waterlogged and that stagnant waters might have weakened the foundation of the church, which eventually collapsed onto the wooden structure, killing the two occupants.
