Ama Atta Aidoo Laments Low Literacy Rate In Ghana

A renowned African writer and professor of English, Ama Atta Aidoo, has bemoaned the poor reading culture of the ordinary Ghanaian. Today, March 1 marks World Book Day and according to Madam Aidoo, Ghana has nothing to celebrate as its development as a result of the lack of reading and reading materials available in schools. Most of us unfortunately have not been reading even at the secondary schools, feeling that reading is literature and that literature is a subject meant for only those who read it, she complained. Prof. Aidoo also added that the recently launched Mbasem Foundation is aimed at putting together a national literacy manifesto. The essence of the literacy manifesto is to make available a document that would point to certain critical areas that we can deal with as a nation and as a people, so we can reduce the negative literacy rate, she explained.
