A renowned African writer and professor of English, Ama Atta Aidoo, has bemoaned the poor reading culture of the ordinary Ghanaian.
Today, March 1 marks World Book Day and according to Madam Aidoo, Ghana has nothing to celebrate as its development as a result of the lack of reading and reading materials available in schools.
�Most of us unfortunately have not been reading even at the secondary schools, feeling that reading is literature and that literature is a subject meant for only those who read it,� she complained.
Prof. Aidoo also added that the recently launched �Mbasem Foundation� is aimed at putting together a national literacy manifesto.
�The essence of the literacy manifesto is to make available a document that would point to certain critical areas that we can deal with as a nation and as a people, so we can reduce the negative literacy rate,� she explained.
