The Electoral Commission (EC) has apologized for some errors associated with the daily registration figures it provided in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Initially, the EC reported that 143,014 eligible voters had been registered by the end of day four of the exercise.
However, in a subsequent statement less than 24 hours after releasing these figures, the EC issued a follow-up statement acknowledging an error in the data for day three, specifically in the Upper East region.
Simple addition
The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr and other pundits have criticized the Commission for these errors especially ahead of a "crucial" general election.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo'on Tuesday, Kwesi Pratt said: “Is the Electoral Commission saying that they cannot do simple addition? A whole electoral body like the Electoral Commission cannot do a simple addition. How can Ghanaians repose confidence in you? This is just a registration exercise which has been characterised by abysmal happenings. What then will they do about the general elections when it is held?"
"These errors in the results by the Electoral Commission, how do you explain it? We’ve gone to register names. We have the tallies; simple addition, the Electoral Commission cannot do it…I can’t understand this; a whole Electoral Commission cannot do addition. There is no subtraction, division or multiplication and you can’t do this!”
Apology
Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission speaking to the issue on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo' apologized adding "It wasn't deliberate"
"The numbers out are provisional; they're not the final figures. But we apologize and assure Ghanaians that it won't happen again" he stated.
He further went on to explain what actually led to the errors.
