The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has assured that his government “will fund the cost of public Senior High Schools for all those who qualify for entry from the 2017/2018 academic year onwards.”
Spelling out the details of policy, “so that no one in Ghana is left in any doubts”, President Akufo-Addo explained that “by free SHS, we mean that, in addition to tuition which is already free, there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer lab fees, no examination fees, no utility fees; there will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals, and day students will get a meal at school for free.”
The President added further that “Free SHS will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level. I also want to state clearly again that we have a well-thought out plan that involves the building of new public Senior High Schools and cluster public Senior High Schools”.
President Akufo-Addo made this known on Saturday, February 11, 2017, when, as the Special Guest of Honour, he delivered a speech at the 60th Anniversary celebration of Okuapeman School.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, “One Vision, Many Lives”, the President noted that a society that aims to transform itself into a modern, productive player in the global market needs an educated workforce; and that means it must get its educational policies right.
According to the President, the fact that “we have been unable to give all our citizens the education which has enabled the countries of the West and of Asia to thrive is the missing link in our economic development.”
For this reason, the President told the gathering that he is committed, “without any equivocation, without any reservation, without any doubt”, to take Ghana to the stage where public Senior High School education will be free for every Ghanaian child.
Motivated Teachers
President Akufo-Addo noted that a well-trained, confident and contented teacher is at the heart of his government’s delivery of quality education.
He assured that “the views of teachers will be sought on education policy, innovation and implementation. Their professional development and needs will be treated with respect and we shall ensure that teachers’ salaries and allowances are paid regularly and on time.”
President Akufo-Addo also indicated that teacher trainee allowances, as already announced by the Vice President, will be restored in the first budget of his presidency, which is scheduled for next month.
“My administration will also focus on the provision of incentives that will motivate teachers, and reward their hard work in the classroom. Government will collaborate with GNAT, NAGRAT, and other teaching associations to facilitate an affordable housing scheme for teachers. Teachers will be afforded the opportunity to upgrade their qualifications and we aim to make the teaching profession, once again, a proud choice,” he added.
The President, in concluding, pledged his commitment to the renovation and the full equipping of the Science Resource Centre of Okuapeman School as a commemorative event of its 60th birthday.

What about PTA dues.
I have a toys car can u change it to a range rover? This is someone who just want to chop peoples money so my people wise up, if u get that then do it for yourself and get money and stop trying to bully people...shamelesssss being
I dont see where he said boarding house will be free. If you want to be in the boarding house, then you have to pay. the rest are free. So the difference between day and boarders is clear.
Promise No 2 fulfilled. Teacher Trainee Allowance restored. Free SHS is here. Under the NDC, it was like "we the willing following the unknowing, we were doing the impossibilities. And we did it for so long with so little that we were able to everything with nothing". We survived unnecessary and unjustified starvation. Under Akuffo Addo, the change and psychological healing is admiringly affectionate. Welcome free SHS. But i agree with Maa, Boarding fee should not be free, plus certain costs.
Good News Mr. President. You and the ruling NPP Team have proven that you are honest Politicians who keep to the promise of the people. Your HE. You indeed changing the face of politics in Ghana. Thank you for honouring the campaign promise. I feel proud to be a Ghanaian! Now education will not be the luxury of the rich in society but an opportunity for all citizens. With free SHS, the future is already bright in Ghana. It was indeed worth voting for Nana Addo in 2008, 2012 and 2016. May God give you and the team, the wisdom, courage and strength to succeed. The ordinary citizens will keep praying for you
Its about time we stopped duping gullible people in our society. We should teach our youth that no amount of spiritual whatever can create wealth. Its about hard work and perseverance. These so called spiritualists should be condemned forthrightly and discredited. They are hindering the progress of our nation. So good people of Ghana if u see any one purporting to have the power to create wealth for u just remember they want to dupe u.Shame on all those spiritualists.
See the doubting thomases; life under the NDC was so difficult that almost everything was impossible to achieve. Now that Nana is going to fulfil his promise its so hard for some to believe it.To them it sounds too good to be true. But seriously, looking at the current state of our education system nothing less than free is good enough.U cant develop a nation without first developing its people and u cant develop the people without making education widely accessible. No child should be left out and no parent can have an excuse for not want to send their ward to school. We all should support this policy.Well done Nana!...Ghana is beginning to work again!
Good, mr. President. I think Ghanaians should give the president the full support for his free education policy. We shouldn't be so negative about the president ideas. He is making a positive move about what he promised to Ghanaian people about education. Mr. President, we are behind you all the way. I know the beginning will not be easy! No matter how difficult it may be, I am fully assured we will get there. Keep the good work up.
Nana Addo, I don't think boarding fee should be free . The rest can be free but not boarding fee. If a parent want their child to be a boarder then they should pay for it. This is not done any where in this world. I
