Large quantities of expired goods and drugs have been uncovered at some shops and drugs shops at Elmina by the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) municipal environmental and mental health office.
This was after the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in collaboration with the KEEA Assembly embarked on a special two-weeks operation to rid the shops in the municipality of expired products.
Led by Alex Damptey, the group arrested shop owners who were found culpable of having expired products on their shelves.
Mr. Damptey said although this is a routine exercise, the special operations, “is to ensure food safety of consumers as we enter Easter festivities are here.”
In today’s operation, two pharmacies in Elmina town center were closed after expired drugs were cleared off their shelves.
Some of the expired goods seized so far include assorted canned fish, drinks and beer.
Those arrested are with the police.
According to Mr. Damptey, the items will be destroyed after a court action has been taken against the sellers.
