A couple and their son met their death when they were carried away by flood water after their two-bed room house collapsed at Kronum Kwapra, near Bremang in Kumasi on Friday night June 26. A second of the couple who escaped death raised the alarm.
Neighbors who defied the heavy downpour could only retrieve the bodies of the man, Opanin Agya Boakye, 66 and the son, Akwasi Douglas, 11. The body of the wife, Ama Amponsah, 50 is yet to be found.
Their surviving son, identified only as Solomon, said the family woke up at about midnight to find their rooms filled with water following a heavy down-pour. The compound had also been flooded and in their attempt to escape his parents and brother were carried away by the flood water. It is believed that a stream nearby, which is a tributary of the Owubi River, overflowed its banks and caused the flooding.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Opoku Manu, in the company of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive, Samuel Sarpong, Ashanti Regional Commander, Patrick Timbillah, visited the neighborhood on Saturday June 27, to console the bereaved family. Mr. Opoku Manu advised against building in flood-prone areas and waterways and said government would ensure that such practice is stopped.
