The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has slapped the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with a fine of GH¢ 202,640 for breaching its statutory obligations to customers.
The PURC has therefore asked the ECG to pay the amount by the end of working hours on Friday, September 16, 2016.
Failure to comply with the order shall attract an additional fine of GH¢10,000.00 for each day that the ECG fails to comply with the order.
A statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and External Affairs, Nana Yaa Jantuah, said the sanction is as a result of the strike action embarked on by staff of the ECG in the first week of September 2016.
The statement said the penalty also covers the ECG’s refusal to provide contingency measures to ensure customers of pre-payment metering could proceed to buy credits during the industrial stike.
It will be recalled that the ECG workers on Friday, September 2 and Monday, September 5, closed their doors to customers to compel government to rescind its decision to privatise the company; thus denying customers services rendered by the company at the various offices.
The statement added that the PURC as the regulator of water and electricity services would protect the interest of the consumer and ensure the financial viability of the utility service provider.

Who are the beneficiaries of the PRUC fines against ECG?
no sale of gov't property has ever benefitted ghanaians but then that's what we have chosen for as our mode of governance. endless sales, borrowing, taxation and levying and the mahama admin. has turned governance into profiteering by any means necessary. The ECG deal is like a power-sharing agreement between gov't and ECG. GOV'T SELLS THE PLACE TO SOMEONE WILLING TO RETAIN THE SAME OLD STAFF WHO HAVE REFUSED TO SERVE GHANA ALL THESE YEARS. The value is the same and a fine on ecg is really a fine on you and me. watch out for your next bill.
Who Fines PURC ? All you know is fines and increase in utilities .***barred word***
Who feel the pain by paying that amount? ECG is for the country so if it's fined who suffers, we must be serious for once. The country will pay PURC for the fine and the workers will receive their salaries meaning who's being ***barred word***.
I was there this monrning and did not like what I saw.Customers who had come to make complains after 9: am had to wait because those ECG staff will be attending to us were havig their breakfast according to the security man.One official in my absence had accused of by-passing the meter without any evidence.but they were aquing that their field officer cannot be wrong.
Who is going to be the beneficiary of the fine if its paid since its the Customers who suffered as a result of the strike action. We need to know.
