There is a very good reason why the framers of the 1992 Constitution, decided to bar our chiefs from engaging in active politics.
Chiefs have a special place in our societies; they represent our heritage and act as our conscience, they make up for where politicians have failed.
They head our various communities and tribes, their subjects are adherents of the various political parties we have, it is the more reason why chiefs, must not be seen to align to any political party.
They are agents of change, how they comport themselves and act as catalyst to bring development to their people, is very important.
To be able to discharge their duties dispassionately, they must be seen to be neutral and in order to do this; they need to stay clear of partisan politics.
Unfortunately, our chiefs for selfish reasons, and in clear violation of the Constitution, have been falling over each other to endorse one presidential candidate or another.
The sign is a disturbing one that calls for all well-meaning Ghanaians to speak up; we cannot afford to lose our chiefs too to politics.
A chief is like a father or family head, who must treat every member of the family as equal, he must not take sides, his neutrality is very vital in ensuring that, he still maintains his respect before his subjects.
The first thing every politician does, when he or she visits a town or village is to call on the chief, if the chief, has endorsed a presidential candidate, exposing his biases, how can he be visited by the other candidates and what signs does that send to his subjects?
The Constitution was clear, Chiefs are like Judges, who should at all times, be above partisan politics, they are the people we call on when things don’t go well, we should be able to trust that, they will attend to all of us regardless of party affiliation.
They have equal stake in the governance of this nation, but as leaders they know the difficulties involve in managing people and their expectations, it is the more reason why, when they join their subjects in demanding the impossible from governments, some right-thing people, begin to question whether they understand, what it means to be a leader.

Who is the person writing this thing in the Herald? Are Constitutions perfect documents to eternity? They can be only as goods as the ability of the people who wrote them. But there are some fundamental equality of rights that all must have without limitation. Are Chiefs not Ghanaians? It is our failure to find a proper place for them in our Constitutional Dispensation that we took a cheap stance to try excluding them. Even our colonial masters found a better way to work with them. If indeed it is so as Herald wants it to be then they should tell the politicians to stop paying them flamboyant courtesy calls on their political rounds. Leave Chiefs alone.
Eeeeeeeeiiiiii! The Herald come again ! When did you find this?4 legs bad 2 legs good. God is the creator of the universe and all that is in it so what goes around comes around. NDC were jumping, clapping when the chiefs were endorsing their incompetent thi*f president and his cronies by bribing them with V8s and when the honest chiefs who wants honesty in every deed came out to endorse the opposition in their numbers ndc rented press have now found something in our Constitution to defend their argument hahahaha when it is coming it is doing. Eeeeiiii now the so called owners of Ghana see everything wrong with the real custodians of our lands the chiefs in endorsement, then The Herald you've hit the rock that capsized the Titanic ship hehehehe !more of that is to come due to the incompetence, family ,family rinds and cronies government of your party. I heart bleeds for JJ Rawlings and the is a saying that every child is a fo*l but wisdom rests in the elderly. The man toiled with his sweat and blood to form this party only for Mahama family to enjoy while his wife is thrown out of the ship, her sin being offering herself to compete with somebody they have planned to kill to bring in the mahama family so together they can ste*l from the Ghanaian people and destroy their country caring a hoot about anything. Did Rawlings the founder of the ndc turned that party into his family affair like we sing now? Didn't Rawlings had siblings and a mother? Didn't his wife had siblings and a mother? Didn't both of them had relations? Did we ever see any of them in politics or owning the country like John mahama's brothers doing to our country with Ibrahim being guided by our military what show of power and opulence the main cause of Rawlings revolution being practiced contrary by the party he formed with his sweat and blood. What is blocking John mahama to form his own party and display this type of power and opulence if he is a real man like Rawlings and others who have formed their parties? It is sad to see somebody destroy someone's hard earned legacy. John mahama and his siblings couldn't keep their own father's estate but spent it lavishly in discos how can such a person be president on somebody's party ticket? President Rawlings I share your anger and frustration. I Weep For You,you've toiled in vain. My prayer is for the ndc to go to opposition for you to get back your party. God will Speak come Dec.7th
