A Lecturer with the University of Education Winneba Kumasi Campus, Yarhans Arthur is advocating for abolition of the system where students are mandated to write the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) before they can gain entry requirements to enter Senior High Schools (SHSs).
“Redefining of basic education should give every school going child the opportunity to enter public Senior High School without any entrance requirements”, the Lecturer stated.
“Fee education does not mean people be restricted from getting admission into public Senior High Schools (SHSs)”
” So if Nana Akufo-Addo and government say they should be free education, then the BECE should not be entry requirements to get admission into public SHSs Remember that in this country, we already have the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) which means one should have quality education standards”, he averred.
The arithmetic lecturer who doubles as National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator during a discussion pointed out that government policy to make education free should not be sacrificed for quality.
Mr. Yarhans Arthur however stated that NDC as a socialist political party is not against the implementation of free education but wants NPP government to it do well by extending the program to all private SHSs in the country.

I do not get the point in this presentation given by this lecturer. We would like to know his views and strategies as to how to place the students into various secondary schools across the country.. Secondary, We want him to tell us how different he would address protocals of Nananom in which the schools are situated. Thirdly, what about the 40/44 percent candidates that fail the BECE annually from 1989 up to date. What are programmes designed for those students. Mr. Lecturer, please offer a constructive criticism with solutions and finally think globally and act locally.
What is wrong this lecturer? Wholesale admission to SHS? Mr. Supper-socialist, that is not done even in Russia! Why should you put politics over intelligential? Norway, Finland, Sweden....... all have free-SHS but there are competitions and restrictions.
Yes and I second you Mr. Arthur. There's too much requirements in raising and transforming our children, meanwhile we know psychologically millions of poor Ghanaian children are poor in mind critical thinking. Even our wanna leaders who have seen a lot n experienced in life are hoodwink by western policies and development handout which doesnot work for us how then the Ghanaian child. #AbolishBECENow
We shd abolish WASSCE too bcos SHS is free huh? Some logic!
