Six police officers have been summoned to the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) Bureau of the Ghana Police Service to answer charges of misconduct.
The six, who are all stationed at the Sekondi Police Regional headquarters, were caught on video collecting money from drivers at the Inchaban Barrier.
The Director-General of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr David Eklu, told the Daily Graphic that when the attention of the Ghana Police Service was drawn to the video, which had gone viral on social media, personnel of the PIPS were tasked to investigate the authenticity of the video.
He said a team was dispatched to Inchaban where the police personnel were identified and invited to appear before the PIPS in Accra this week for interrogation.
He, however, declined to mention the identities of the affected personnel.
Unprofessional conduct
Mr Eklu made it clear that unprofessional conduct by police personnel went against the vision of the Ghana Police Service to be a world-class police service.
He reminded motorists that they were not obliged to give money to police officers on barrier duties or at any other duty point.
“As part of the measures to discourage police officers from taking money from drivers, clear guidelines will soon be given to distinguish the duties of the various police officers at barriers, police officers on highway patrol duties, and police officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD),” he stated.
Mr Eklu said it was the resolve of the police administration not to shield any police officer who indulged in acts of unprofessionalism that were likely to bring the name of the police service into disrepute.

There is one notorious one at Asutuare Junction when you are traveling from Accra to Kpong. He mostly asks for money from private vehicles occupied by only one person. That way it is his word against yours. He doesn't stop commercial vehicles. He always wears goggles so you can't look him in the eye. He always says: hello master, your boys are on the road this evening/weekend, what can you do for us? Last year he was just a junior officer, this year he's gained promotion and is carrying a baton of some sort. His superiors are always sitting on the benches or plastic chairs in the background.
Majority of police men and women are guilty of this. Come to Ofankor Barrier on the Achimota Nsawam Road where some un-scrup-lous police men park the Police Patrol vehicle and openly solicit money from the trotro drivers who block half of the road picking and off loading passengers.Instead of these policemen maintaining order by directing the traffic. They take money from drivers.
sheeei awam ni! 'wasn't me' principle must apply to all police officers. Police officers are seen almost on every road in all regions practicing similar behavior against drivers and road users. I traveled a lot and in fact one do not need a camera to bear witness of such miscreant attitude among most of traffic police controllers. Get to Ho road at Peki junction, Sokode. Move to cape coast road and check Apam junction. slip to Tamale few miles to town and witness Police officers collecting 'bribe' fiili fiili. On kumasi Bekwai, Obuasi, New edubiase, mampong, sunyani - Techiman road, which barrier can be used by any citizen to prove of integrity at most police barriers. Amasaman which is even close to the capital city, city of IGP, the city of Mr. President, Some police officers on duty are seen collecting 'bribes' from motorists. I know there are good ones, but the selfish police officers are many. Weed them out if you really want Ghanaian populace to recognise Pooice as real professionals and men of integrity.
come and catch Akosombo Police too
Why do motorists going to Afariwaa junction (Comm 22) have to use the spoilt bypass of the road at the barrier? The police mount a barrier on the 'good' asphalt and compel motorists to use the desperately spoilt pavement block diversion. Is there something wrong with us or the police?
Police officers in Ghana taking money from drivers is normal and part of the police service activities in Ghana. Cuz when you come to SUNYANI the MTTD men and women are always on the road purposely to take money from tax drivers! In sunyani almost all MTTD officers owned cars cuz of their activity of taking money from drivers every morning. They are in the morning in front of St James Senior High School, Fiapre close to the Berlin roundabout, Baakoniaba GNAT junction and Kotokrom just after the military camp just taking money every morning.
Let's all not be spectators and for that matter, let us as citizens try as much as we can to get all of the bribe collecting policemen on record. After all A+ has shown the way. More of such videos if the IGPs and the commissioners claim they don't know. Record and share more of such videos to expose them. At the same time, don't forget the LAND-GUARDS too. It is about time the citizens cleaned out GHANA
Is the IGP trying to say he doesnt know of bribery at check points and barries. Its a very big shame for him to say these six police-men almost spoilt the reputation of Ghana Police Service because their reputation is already lost
ONE SUCH HARVEST GROUNDS IS THE ANGLOGA JUNCTION IN KUMASI. YOU ARE TAKEN TO THE POLICE STATION IN THE CORNER WHERE THE TRANSACTION IS CONCLUDED ON THE COMPOUND BUT NOT AT THE STATION ITSELF.
NOW ALMOST EVERYBODY IN GHANA HAS A CELL PHONE TO RECORD EVERY ACTIVITY OF THE POLICE , VERY SOON THERE WILL BE MORE VIDEOS COMING OUT TO PROVE THE BRIBERY ACTIVITIES GHANA POLICE HAS BEING DOING SINCE CENTURIES .. GHANAIAN POLICE ENJOY BRIBERY THAN THE WORK THEY ARE SUPPOSE TO GO. SHAMEEEEEEE UNTO THOSE WHO DO THAT
