The National Association of Pensioners has appealed for substantial upward adjustment of their monthly pension to make things a bit better for them.
Mr. Seth Sesi Ametefe, its President, said what they were currently receiving was too meagre, something which had made the going difficult for majority of them.
Some of the pensioners, he said, had been taking less than GH?400.00, a month and wondered how anybody could survive on such a paltry amount of money.
He indicated that a 100 per cent increase in pensions would not be asking for too much from the government, considering their health needs and other social responsibilities.
He was speaking at the launch of the association’s silver jubilee celebration in Kumasi.
The theme chosen for the event is “Mobilizing pensioners for a healthy and better life” and activities lined up include town hall meetings, radio programmes, health talk and excursions.
He encouraged all pensioners to join the association to help give them a stronger voice.
Mr. Edward Ameyibor, the General Secretary, spoke of the introduction of a pensioners’ medical scheme - an intervention to aid members to access quality medical care.
The scheme, he said, covered optical treatment, gynecological cancers, physiotherapy and prostate care.
Mr. Ameyibor asked that the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) supported the scheme to enable more people to benefit.

No wonder audit service has quickly jumped to CAP30. Those ppl are retiring with their basic salary and risk and duty allowance combined!!! Imagine, government paying risk and duty allowance for a pensioner. Gh is krazy. hahaha
YEEi, an old man receiving less than Ghc 400 a month as pension? Inhuman treatment paa. I'm very2 sure Nana will listen to our cry because he's a pensioner himself, an Olu like us. It's not easy at all being a pensioner without any profession to rely a bit on. A pauper is the right word to describe him in the eyes of everybody. Some of us are still strong in body & mind to work. Why not evaluate us & employ us . Teachers, language experts, accountants, name it are all among us. So pl. Nana, some countries are doing it for the benefit of the pensioners & families & the nation as a whole, why not Ghana?
The details also include that they would take your three best years and find the average and based on the average they calculate your pfnsion.
The pensions are paid to the salary you were receiving and according the time you retired whether it was full pension or the minimum age that you decides to activate the PENSION. It goes up every years and the percentages differ year by year and the highest I have seen is 20% but it has never gone below 10% .
