Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. says the attempt by the Commissioner of Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service, Ms. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo Danquah to apply communication technique “fly the kite” in the three kidnapped girls was a wrong aapproach.
He insisted that as a practitioner of communication, he knows the Commissioner of CID intended to use “flying the kite” communication technique to fish out the kidnappers from their hideout by saying they know the whereabouts of the girls as politicians use when they want to test for public reaction on some policy measures they think may be unpopular.
Contributing to a panel discussion on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji talk show, the veteran journalist said even though “flying the kite” approach is good, it should not have been applied in the case of the three kidnapped girls
“But unfortunately in the case of the three kidnapped girls, I do not think that what the Commissioner of CID did was to fly a kite. She actually called a full blown press conference and personally announced that the whereabouts of the kidnapped girls was known and that they will soon be released. That is not how you fly a kite”, he stated.
Explaining his stance, Uncle Kwesi Pratt, as he is affectionately called averred that “if you fly a kite in respect of the kidnapped girls, normally it is expected that the kidnappers will become jittery and might want to change their location; they might do certain things which will enable you to pinpoint their location. So you fly a kite in circumstances where you are close to identifying where they are; where you know that they are in a certain location and you want confirmation”.
“So you then fly a kite to watch that area and to look for signs of their presence. You don’t fly a kite by addressing a press conference by the Commissioner of CID. I think that it was improper; it was not the truth and it has led to a certain level of los of confidence in the police establishment by the public”, he added.
