Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority [NIA], Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah has said he gets worried on most occasions when he visits registration centres.
He said the exercise is not working as they envisaged due to the challenges he met during his tour to most registration centres in the Accra West areas, even though some officers on the field are doing their work well per observation and reports from residents.
“It is not our wish that citizens suffer or go through stress in getting themselves registered on the Ghana Card. It is unfortunate that the number of machines needed for the exercise are not sufficiently in place, while some centres also experience network problems delaying the printing of the cards,” he indicated on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ programme.
Prof. Ken Attafuah blamed some of his trained workers on the field for not working as they were trained to do.
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has urged residents of the Accra West Zone, where the mass registration ended on Saturday, May 25, to collect their Ghana cards at some designated collection points in the Municipalities.
It said residents who would be unable to register during the mass registration exercise in the Accra West Zone would be able to do so at District and Regional offices to be set up by NIA after the mass registration exercise.
A statement issued by the Authority, and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, on Saturday, explained: "The NIA is unable to grant the request to extend the duration of the mass registration exercise in the said Zone as doing so will adversely affect the published national roll-out strategy."
The statement, signed by Mr Francis Palmdetti, the Head of Corporate Affairs, said the collection points would be located in the following areas:
1. Ga South (Bortianor, Ngleshie, Amanfro)
2. Ga South (Weija, Gbawe, Domeabra/Obom)
3. Ga Central (Anyaa, Sowutuom)
4. Ga West (Trobu, Amasaman)
5. Ga North
6. Okaikoi South,
7. Okaikoi Central
8. Okaikoi North.
9. Ablekuma South,
10. Ablekuma Central
11. Ablekuma West
12. Ablekuma North.

The Ghana card registration is a failure n the executives must bow their heads down in shame. When these professors are blasting politicians, one would think they can do better until they are given a simple assignment like the Ghana card registration n that's when u will know they are failures when it comes to practicality but they are only good at speaking grammar. How can a simple registration like this take about a week or two to complete? U sit in your air-conditioned offices without proper supervision n u allow your officials at the various centres to disregard us as if we are no body n they are doing us favours. Prof in fact I must tell u that u have failed in this simple exercise. U must intensify supervision to out your officials on their toes. Y must one wake up at 1:00 am to join queue for a common card like that. We are disappointed.
In my opinion, Ghana card registration points should be at the District or Local Assemblies in conjunction with the Birth and death registry. This must be a permanent office networked via VPN to the central office, the process must be indefinite. Moving from place to place to register with deadlines will be filled with challenges as we saw before and seeing now. Ghana is not the first country to issue ID cards. We must copy what is done in the Advanced countries if we really want to develop.
Iam disappointed, learning from experience, I dont think NIA has any excuse. We are gradually repeating the same problem of the previous registration. That is difficulty in capturing eligible candidates and difficulty in printing and distribution of cards, I am so sad. Being aware of the problems, we have no justification repeating, if only we are willing solving the problems. So sad as a Ghanaian. What can we get right as a nation?
This Ghana Card registration is a failure by NPP Government - chop chop keke
