Simon Osei-Mensah has vehemently rejected calls from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Workers’ Union to issue an apology over the arrest of one of their Managers in the region.
The Ashanti regional minister noted that, the arrest of Mark Wiafe Asomani, the Ashanti East Manager of the ECG, was based on security reasons.
Addressing the press on Thursday, April 25, in Kumasi, the regional minister pointed out that there were initial agreements between the ECG and the Kumasi Technical University to address the University’s accumulated debts.
According to Simon Osei-Mensah, the arrest of the ECG manager is a step in the right direction stating that he was merely carrying out his responsibilities and had not committed any wrongdoing.
He said, “Do I have to apologise for doing my security work? What I want to tell you is that I asked the police to invite Ing Mark Asomani Wiafe on security grounds because of the happenings in the electricity sector in the region, and the fact that a task force can always come from outside to disconnect without the proper information."
“What is ironic is that they tell me that they are not under me and for that matter, I cannot tell them what to do but they want to tell me how to execute my security responsibilities as enshrined in the Securities and Intelligence Act of 2020, Act 10(30).”
His remarks come after members of the Senior and Junior Staff Unions of the ECG in the Ashanti Region demanded an apology from him for mistreating the area General Manager of ECG.
Mr Wiafe was arrested on the orders of the Ashanti Regional Minister because he allegedly defied his directive to restore power to the school.
Furthermore, he alleged that the ECG had been overcharging him for electricity at his residence while denying any outstanding payments to the power company.
Meanwhile, workers of the ECG in the Ashanti region have halted their revenue mobilisation drive due to safety concerns.
The Chairman of the ECG Senior Staff Ashanti West, John Mensah, expressed fear that the conduct of the Ashanti Regional Minister could embolden members of the public to attack the staff.

Yes, you may have a genuine concern. However your approach in finding solutions to some challenges is where you have a problem. You have been in politics since the J. A. Kufuor ara and one would have thought that you adopt diplomacy in your approach to issues. Unfortunately you are behaving like a Rawlings era PNDC Ashanti regional secretary (minister). The last time you chased away school feeding caterers majority if not all of whom are/were NPP members when they came to your office to complain about the GHC 1 cost of feeding per pupil per day. Now its ECG staff who are up in arms against you. Remember that if you are to remain relevant in politics, you need the votes of ECG staff and their families. ECG staff don't need you at their work place to enable them work. You are old enough to have known that " it is not everything that is right to do, that is wise to do". We have rights but we also have wisdom. If ministerial positions were by examinations in any subject area, none of you sitting there as ministers will be sitting there, including the presidency. Always have this at the back of your mind, Privileges are not rights.
Rasbort (Ras Borketey)... Correction(s) from my earlier post. Good Morning Daddy, (Simon Osei-Mensah) this is just a gentle reminder. Please NOTE that everything that have a beginning has an END... Kindly reflect where you started FROM and where your good Lord (SPIRITUAL FATHER) of creation has brought you so far and STOP this arrogant self life... because tomorrow is NOT there for you unless your creator give it to you. A piece of advice to you DADDY... Amen...

Power drunk. Very soon it will be over. The appointee is the same as the appointee.
There is a way that seemeth right unto man. But in the end thereof, it leads to death. Kurom ha!
This man is so arrogant. No doubt NNP is on it's way out. So arrogant and full of himself. Meanwhile nothing is happening in Ashanti region after waking up early to queue to vote for NPP. Come Dec 7 all will come to an end.
