A National Climate Change Policy as well as an Environment
Policy have been launched in Accra, as a first step towards the country's preparedness to deal with challenges of the global phenomenon.
President John Mahama, who launched the twin policies
stated that climate change should no longer be a topic for debate because the future of the country and generations unborn will be affected by how well the issue of climate change is tackled.
Keta, Ada, Elmina and Axim are among 25 towns seriously affected
by sea level rise due to climate change.
Fishermen along these towns are loosing their livelihood and farming which is an alternative is also impacted by salt water intrusion of lands, also a climate problem.
A lecturer at the department of Marine and Fisheries Science
of the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwasi Appeaning Addo was speaking in Accra at the 3rd Climate Change and Population Conference in Africa.
He said sea level rise is a major problem in Ghana and pragmatic
efforts need to be put in place to address it.
