A well-known Ghanaian medical philanthropist Dr David Abdulai, has passed on after battling stage-4 thyroid cancer.
He died on Sunday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital at age 65.
Dr Abdulai, who left behind a wife and three children, was operating a private clinic where he provided medical care for the poor and mentally ill at no cost.
"Services in this clinic are aimed primarily at the poor and destitute. Purely for love of God and neighbour and are ABSOLUTELY FREE. We depend unconditionally on divine providence," says a signage at his Shekhina Clinic in the Northern region.
President John Mahama had to step in to cover his medical cost at the Ghana Sweden Medical Centre and the 37 Military Hospital when it became evident that his family could not bear his medical bills.
At a point his friends had to launch an online ‘appeal for funds’ known as ‘Go fund me’ to raise money for his upkeep and medical treatment.
“Choggu, as he was affectionately called, remained positive and will give out money to a relative even on his sick bed, I learnt,” a respected nurse and blogger Kobby Blay wrote about the deceased whose life has always been about giving.
He manned the Shekhina Clinic at Gurugu since 1989 with another health centre at Wamale, both in the Northern region.
He has saved the lives of patients with hernia, persons living with HIV, the mentally ill and the destitute.

I AM EXTREMELY BROKEN ABOUT THIS MAN'S DEMISE. HE WAS AN ANGEL SENT FROM ABOVE. THOSE OF US WHO KNEW AND INTERACTED WITH HIM DO TESTIFY OF HIS SELFLESSNESS. HE WAS THE MEDICAL OFFICER WHO VISITED TAMALE CENTRAL PRISON EVERY WEEK TO ATTEND TO THE MEDICAL NEEDS OF INMATES FREE OF CHARGE. WHEN I WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE STATION IN THE YEAR 2000, HE WAS ALREADY OPERATING THERE. MAY HIS GENTLE SOUL REST PEACEFULLY IN THE ARMS OF THE LORD. MY CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY.
Mahama did not cover any bills at SGMC.Thats a fact!Get your facts right before u put up any story.
These are the people we should celebrate in life. Thanks for your contribution to make society a better one. RIP
That is Ghana there for you, this is a country where nobody recognize your contributions when you are alive, keep your fingers crossed and watch the number of condolences and v8 land cruisers that will attend this great mans funeral, the amount used to fuel these vehicles would have taken care of the medical bills of this man. So is Ghana a country worth dying for? The shortest cut to becoming rich and important in Ghana is through politics where in four years a bicycle rider can become owner of a v8 land cruiser, a mansion, and still get 300,000 Ghana cesis(Three billion old cedis),that's why doctors, teachers, nurses, civil servants, retirees all want to be politicians in Ghana. To DOCTOR ABDULAI,MAY ALLAH GRANT YOU "JANNA FIRIDAUS"
SORRY TO HEAR THIS. AM SO SAD. I KNOW HE HAS ARRIVED TO HIS MAKER IN PEACE AND JOY. GOD WILL CREATE HIM AGAIN. OUR NATION GHANA HAS LEST A GEM.
