A parent seeking a admission for his ward at the Accra Girls Senior High School has been denied because she had dreadlocks.
According to the father, his daughter is a Rastafarian and it is against their religion to cut off the locks.
The distraught father, name withheld, said efforts to explain issues to school authorities proved futile. He is convinced their decision to deny his daughter admission is borne out of ignorance.
“I tried to see the headmistress. She was locked in her office. We want to see her to clarify things. We are Rastafarians as such our kids need to be educated...I don’t see why she won’t be able to keep her locks …” the worried father told Adom FM.
He believes Rastafarians in Ghana are being disregarded and disrespected and as such called on the government to intervene.
Meanwhile, the National Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Mr Samuel Gyebi Yeboah has urged head teachers at various Senior high Schools to offer Rastafarian students’ admission.
He also advised parents whose wards are being denied admission to forward their concerns to the Ghana Education Service for immediate action to be taken.

As a Rastafarian, and a Ghanaian, I am deeply disappointed by the way some of my country men and women regard the most natural and original hairstyle of black people, as well as the way they perceive Rastafari in general. Educate yourselves, please... I haven't even mentioned the Geneva conventions and the right to education, or freedom of religion, which are an absolute must for any developed society. Troglodytes, go back to your caves, and let Rastafarians enjoy the basic human right to an education. Our hair is our business, not yours. Sometimes I really wonder if we are even reading the same Bible. Oh well, the heathen shall fear the name of the Lord, is it not?
Being rastaferian doesn't always mean you must have dreadlocks. I have rastaferian friends who don't have dreadlocks and friends with dreadlocks who aren't rastaferian. It's about choices.
The dreadlocks it self is not a worry to me,but their associated lifestyles,so if this child has been exposed to things these Rastafarians think are part of them, where does she practice such lifestyle, definitely not on that school compound. Soon her family will say her rights are being abused. There are people with dreadlocks in our communities who are not Rastafarians,eg fetishistic people. Am not sure if the issue of weed usage and Rastafarians has crossed the mind of those talking against the decision of the school.
You do not ever attempt to compromise the essence of education. Nor should this ever happen in mother Ghana. The Rastafarian community should go back to its so-called roots and explore to rake out what rankles with their philosophy of education. Ghana is rooting for raw knowledge that builds the human person to healthy growth. Superstition and ignorance about what matter and energy constitute in the body our science education curricula would not give religion a chance; Rastafarian thinking is anathema to contemporary Ghana education. We are today fighting with concern errors of thinking that have managed to infiltrate our education.
every institution has it rules. you want to go military just don't bring what you think is right but simply obey the law. I don't want my girl in SHS to be in the same class with a raster class mate for any negative influence. Is raster allowed in the POLICE,NAVY,MILITARY,CEPS.IMMIGRATION, ?????? we cant accept anything. NO WAY.
I am suprised people are really insulting the father of this young lady all because he's fighting to get her daughter who has dreadlocks educated. First off, why should one be denied education if she has dreadlocks? Hmmm 3y3 asem oooo....the man must seek legal advise.
Y'all just talking BS. How does having dreads affect her mentality as a student. Having dreads is just the same as having plaited hair. These don't have any positive or negative effect on the individuals intelligence. Y'all should be advocating for everyone (including those with dreads and plaited hair) to be admitted into school than ignorantly saying they should attend private school. Grow up from the old cliche
Take her back to Jamaica, foreigners are taking over Ghana. We are friendly but We don't entertain indiscipline. Gone are the days when secondary school used to be secondary school and when schools were in the hands of the missions. You will not dream of going to a catholic, SDA or Presbyterian school school with dreadlocks. Father Rastafarian take Daughter Rastafarian to a private school. She might not be a Ghanaian to qualify for free High school and i am thinking this father is trying to use our tax to educate his daughter for free.
Rastafarian plus Tattoos at Senior High School Level.... Tweakai! Please humbly find somewhere and study. Certainly not at Accra Girls. Mmmtttccchhheeewww
This is our school. These are the rules. Follow us or leave us in peace. We can't allow everybody to do what pleases them. It is thus SIMPLE.
