Our beloved homeland of Ghana has been adjudged to be part of the 10 countries with the worst access to toilet facilities to its citizens in the world.
A study conducted by International NGO WaterAid finds that 85.7% of the Ghanaian populace do not have access to decent toilets in their homes and are forced to use mainly unhygienic public toilets or resort to open defecation.
85.7% of the Ghanaian populace equates to roughly 23 million people.
The report, titled ‘Out of Order’, shows that all ten worst countries in regards to access to toilet facilities are in Sub Saharan Africa.
Ghana’s capital and largest city Accra is a huge symptom of this problem, with most houses lacking toilet facilities despite bylaws mandating every compound to have one. Open defecation is also quite common, leading to annual explosions of diseases such as cholera.
