The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has called on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to reconsider its decision to exclude the voter identification card as proof of nationality.
The GFL said the uproar among Ghanaians against the exclusion of the Voter's ID cases was justified noting that "considering the fact that the Voter's ID card applied in the 2016 general elections which ultimately elected the current President of this country".
The NIA in May, this year rolled out the registration for the issuance of the Ghana Card amidst concerns from some citizens on the exclusion of the Voter's ID as part of acceptable national documents.
In a press statement signed by Mr Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the GFL, they advised leaders of the country to think through their actions and inactions to ensure social cohesion, national security, and economic development as according to them, the issue was about the security of Ghana.
"We therefore appeal to the Executive and the Legislature to consider the implications of any action to disenfranchise any Ghanaian and act appropriately".
They questioned the rationale for the decision of the NIA to expunge the Voter's ID card in the process of validating nationality status of Ghanaians despite the ruling by the Supreme Court in the Abu Ramadan versus the Attorney General which they affirmed the Voter's ID card as a proof of identity as a Ghanaian after purging National Health Insurance Scheme ID card.
The GFL pointed out that, "The National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2018 LI 2356 captures the Voter ID as a critical requirement for acquisition of National Identification card".
The Federation reminded the NIA that the process of ascertaining legitimacy of nationality was a critical human rights exercise which should not be manipulated in anyway.

They can cry blood, we will never accept voter ID cards. These are all NDC sponsored groups.
NDC hired nonentities, stop making noise.
'The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL)' talking like street guys? The law passed by both NDC and NPP in parliament says not to voter ID. If you talk like street guys, that will not help. Ask parliament to do something about the LAW if possible!
i have only 2 question to ask... how did Voter ID holders got registered? can't they find some to vouch for them?
What is the problem of the ndc,why are they crying more than the bereaved? haha! I don't get them ! this is a national issue which was sent to parliament where representatives of Ghanaians are and they came out with what the NIA is using so how would any group from where give instructions to them to use voter's ID as proof of ID to register fir Ghana Card when Ghana's voter ID is ECOWAS ID which neighbouring countries nationals use to vote in Ghana fir the ndc, so ,does this mean ndc has no Ghanaian voters? eeeiii! I haven't seen or heard any other party in Ghana complaining about this voters ID than the ndc, you will rot in opposition, NPP will never allow foreigners to vote in Ghana to choose an incompetent and thi*ving government for Ghanaians. It is either you have birth certificate or passport or a Ghanaian citizen who has registered with a Ghana Card, is this one too so difficult for the ndc? eeeeiii! 3ne3 mowo problem, ndc has a big problem ! when will these kriminals have a little love for Ghana, when will ndc be patriotic? ndc is evil, ndc is satanic! Ghanafuo eeeee! Ghanafuo eeeeee!Shine your eyes ooooooo ndc is not good for Ghana !
Sometimes you wander whether some of these groups and their leaders have sand in their heads. They simply CANNOT think. Their preoccupation is to join the criminals to fight for the very flawed systems that we are all trying to clean up. They should go and sleep because NIA is NEVER going to admit this card! The thousands whose names were expunged from the voter register are still holding their ID cards. People should start thinking and leave the NIA alone.
The law makes provision for people without birth cert. and passport. If they refuse to exercise that option, then it is no one's fault. Only people with corrupt intent will push for the admission of voter ID. Voter ID is for voting and nothing else. Ghana card is an ID card for Ghanaians and people with foreign immigration status. The voter register is already overbloated. We cannot produce another edition of overbloated register.
Are people just dumb? The NIA is working with laws passed by parliament for the Ghana Card. I think such appeals must go to parliament for them to amend the law to enable NIA take steps to include whatever you are talking about. Allow the NIA to proceed with their mandate without disturbance.
