Government has planned to construct three more footbridges on the George Walker Bush Highway in an attempt to limit the increasing number of pedestrian deaths on the road.
This is because most road crashes in the Greater Accra region are recorded on the George Walker Bush Highway making it one of the accident-prone roads in the country.
The three new footbridges are to be located at Lapaz Junction, Akweteman Junction and Awoshie.
Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta, Minister for Roads and Highways answering questions on the floor of Parliament stated that the construction of the three bridges adds up to already existing interventions to deal with road accidents on the N1 Highway.
He explained that by June 2019, the three footbridges would be constructed at Lapaz junction, Akweteman Junction and Awoshie.
He said the footbridges would be part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) – Bloomberg initiative for junction improvement to enhance pedestrian safety and avert accidents.
Meanwhile, Patrick Boamah, MP for Okaikwei Central Constituency has lauded government for the construction of the three bridges saying the intervention was critical.
He promised to hold the minister to his word to deliver the project for his constituents.
“We have to commend the government and also ensure that the minister’s promise is kept” he added.

Accra-Kumasi route is a Trans-ECOWAS Hwy and should have at least 4 lanes each way with a formidable median. Second we must have solar street lights on this hwy and all hwys for increased visibility. Third, our vehicles must be roadworthy. And in this regard we need to upscale local industry to manufacture or assemble vehicles for the market eg Kantanka with the benefits of more employment creation. The 10, 15, 20 year old Sprinters are not going to help us. We must start putting some value on our lives. That is the only way others would also begin to put any value on our lives as a people and race. And fourthly, and by far the most important, would be a functioning high speed rail system linking up all the 10 regions for the transport of people and goods as well as the buses which we already have for long distance travel. Then we would have to look at a functioning emergency services system of Police, Fire Service and Ambulance working in tandem in cases of emergencies such as these incidents to quickly address some of these things and to get victims to hospitals with all the quality standards and staff of any in the world to try and save victims. With such an infrastructure system and good maintenance, you are looking at minimal investment in the transport sector for at least 50 years.
