The Electoral Commission (EC) has said it is confident the Abuakwa North by-election will take place as scheduled despite a suit filed against it.
National Youth Organiser of the Peoples National Congress, Abu Ramadan filed an injunction application on Wednesday, seeking to prevent the Commission from holding the elections.
He argued that it will be contemptuous for the EC to conduct the by-election with the current voters register.Mr Ramadan and one Evans Nimako, are therefore asking that the current electoral roll is cleaned before it is used for the by-election because it is not fit for purpose.
Public Relations Officer of the EC, Christian Owusu Parry doubts if the suit will have any effect on the by-election slated for March 29, 2016.
He told Joy News in an interview, I do not think that it will have any impact on the register that will be used but I am not the one to make the pronouncements. Lets wait until the court makes pronouncements.
He said notices of election have already been sent to the district for posting so we are ready for the election.About 40,068 registered voters are expected to vote in 69 polling stations during the election.
The conduct of the by-election follows the unexpected death of the MP for Abuakwa North, Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu.He was stabbed to death at his home by 19-year-old Daniel Asiedu.Police have arrested Daniel Asiedu, who they say confessed to committing the crime alongside two other persons.
Investigations are still ongoing.
