Bright Boateng, the communication officer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region, has been suspended by the party for three months, accused of endorsing an independent parliamentary candidate, instead of the party’s elected candidate.
The suspension of Bright Boateng was on the basis that he had predicted that the NDC parliamentary candidate for the area, Mr. Appiah Kubi, would be defeated in the November poll because he is not mature in politics to win the seat for the NDC; and therefore decided to openly declare his support for the independent candidate, Nana Asiedu Offei.
Mr Offei doubles as the Presiding Member for the Akropong North Municipal Assembly.
At an emergency meeting of the Regional Executive Committee and the Akuapim North Constituency executives in Koforidua on Tuesday, the NDC suspended Bright Boateng from the party for three months, effective 19th April, 2016.
According to a press release signed by the NDC Deputy Regional Secretary, Frank Annor Dompreh, “Mr Bright Boateng, the Akuapem North Constituency Communication Officer, went public 18/04/16 specifically, on Eastern 105.1 Fm and Radio Mountain 96.1 to openly campaign for an independent candidate against the party’s duly elected parliamentary candidate, ostensibly preaching ‘skirt and blouse,’ which according to the party, is clearly in violation of Article 44 (b, c and e) of the party’s constitution.
“We are by this release informing our party members and the general public that Mr. Bright Boateng has been suspended from the party.”
The statement added that Mr Boateng therefore could not represent the party on any platform and also warned the media not to engage him in his capacity as a member of the party or a party communicator.
“The matter has accordingly been referred to the party’s Disciplinary Committee for the necessary disciplinary procedure to take place in line with Article 45(2) of the party’s constitution,” the statement underscored.
When Mr Boateng was contacted by DAILY GUIDE he said the regional executives could not suspend him. “They have no locus to suspend me; what they are doing is outrageous. I am a full member who believes in the party’s ideology but won’t sit down for things to get out of hands,” he warned.
He added, “I have declared ‘kirt & blouse in the constituency with the support of the national executives. Nobody can ask me not to speak for the party. Our (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Appiah Kubi, is not mature in politics and can’t take the seat from the NPP, that’s why I am supporting the independent candidate, who can win the seat.”
