Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has said criticisms against former Cocobod CEO Dr Stephen Opuni for taking a gross salary of GHS75,000 during his tenure of office may be premature.
According to him, the salary must first be probed to ascertain whether Dr Opuni deserved it or not before such criticisms are hurled at him.
“Corruption is high in the country because employers cheat employees in Ghana, so my point is that the fat salary given to someone should not be an issue. For now, let’s investigate those issues to find out if the nation benefited from them or not. Then we can also find out if the salary was realistic or not, we should not jump to conclusions without proper investigations,” Mr Kufuor told Accra-based Top FM on Wednesday, 29 March.
This follows comments by the new chairman of the board of Cocobod, Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman that the amount was “unthinkable”.
“For me, it is absolutely unthinkable that the gross salary of the Chief Executive Officer should be in the neighbourhood of GHS 70,000 to GHS 75,000 a month, and the net is about GHS 55, 000 to GHS 57,000 a month. If you even discount this by 50 per cent, it would still be higher than anybody under Article 71 of the constitution,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman bemoaned that even after a cut in salaries of the top management of COCOBOD, they will still earn more than the highest paid Article 71 office holder.
He wondered why cocoa farmers were not benefitting from the proceeds of their work but managers were rather enriching themselves with the sweat of the farmers.
Mr Owusu-Agyeman has, therefore, hinted at a possible slash of the amount by half.

I do not blame J A Kufour. He gave 13% Oil money to 26millions Ghanaians and have 3% to his 2 Ghanaian friends who brought KOSMOS to Ghana. What a 419 deal. Every oil profit from Jubillee field, his two friends has 3% until the contract with KOSMOS will end. All our leaders are thirds. Apart from Kwame Nkrumah and Attah Mills, the rest are corrupted to the core.
This is what happen when you vote for kalipo President. childish decisions and unnecessary moves.
Indeed "my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge" - most Ghanaians pretend to know the cost of everything and the value of nothing! All the ex-President is saying is that we take it easy. I am sure the CEO didn't get up and just write himself a monthly salary of 75,000 cedis. If something is wrong then we should check the system that allows such benefits and then fix it. Sure it seems unconscionable for a public servant to be paid such and when the lowest paid public servant earns 270 cedis/month, but hold the system that approved such scales. All these dimwits insulting the ex-Prez, it seems to me that you are rather showing how pathetic your life is.
The man is ***barred word*** of wisdom listen to him, other people take fatter salaries than Opuni but Hackman just want to play politricks on Ghanaians at the end he will end up taking more than Opuni
JAK, please stop disgracing yourself!
I AM TOLD ALL THIS TOP EXECUTRIVES ARE PAID IN DOLLAR EQUIVELENT. IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEN THEIR SALLARIES WILL KEEP SOARING UP SINCE THE DOLLAR KEEP RISING AGAINST THE CEDI. THIS ATTEMPT TO CRIMINALIASE DR. UPUNI IN THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPENION BEFORE ANY ADVERSE FINDING AGAINST HIM IS WORRYING. NPP THIS VERY THING YOU ARE DOING IS WHAT WILL BRING THE CURRUPTION. THIS ATTEMPT TO CUT DOWN THE SALARRIES OF ALL THIS TOP EXECUTIVE FOR THE SAKE OF CHEEP POLITICS WILL BRING CURRUPTION. SO LET US PROBE THE MATTER FURTHER AS SAID BY PRESIDENT KOFFOUR.
Who was paying Avram Grant a month. The guy was earning not less than ¢400,000 a month. Opuni's money is chicken change. The Government is not serious
I still don't understand, how much was Avram Grant taking as Ghana Coach. $150,000 which is about GH¢480,000. Let be serious as a country and let stop this nosenseeeeeeeee.
You guys should go back and read what the former president is saying. He has'nt supported the big ooooo salary of Dr Opuni. He said we should take time and check if he worked for it and therefore he deserved it. Though i personally do not support and would never be in support of this payment, i do not have problem with what J.A Kufour is saying.
Ah former president Kufour, I never expected this from you. How can you justify this outrageous act. You should have rather condone it. I'm very disappointed in you.If this huge amount of money can go to only a single man's pocket then we are rich as a country. He must be investigated.
