Former President John Mahama has parried claims that Kwame Nkrumah is not the Founder of Ghana, stating that those making the claims are seeking to reverse history.
“It remains a dark irony of our history that, the very political tradition which conspired to truncate his unparalleled vision on 24th February 1966, is today seeking to revise Ghana's history,” the former president said in a message ahead of Nkrumah’s birthday Thursday.
He holds that Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, is recognised internationally as the Founder of modern Ghana and an international symbol of freedom.
“He was a Pan-Africanist, a philosopher, a writer, and a visionary who matched his words with actions. His towering personality is still recognized in Ghana and beyond,” he said.
President Nana Akufo-Addo recently proposed a legislation to Parliament to designate August 4 as Founders Day, ditching September 21 as the commemorative day for Ghana’s liberation and independence fighter, Kwame Nkrumah.
September 21 will now be observed as 'Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day'.
Both days – August 4 and September 21 -- will be observed as public holidays, according to a statement signed by the Director of Communications at the presidency, Mr Eugene Arhin said.
“It is clear that successive generations of Ghanaians made vital contributions to the liberation of our country from imperialism and colonialism. It is, therefore, fitting that we honour them, as those who contributed to the founding of our nation," the communication from the Presidency explained.

On the 21st day of September, I join millions all over the world to remember Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah- the Founder of Ghana, a global icon and the BBC Listeners "Man of the Millennium".
Osagyefo's emergence as the Founder of modern Ghana and an international symbol of freedom was not by accident. He was a Pan-Africanist, a philosopher, a writer, and a visionary who matched his words with actions.
His towering personality is still recognized in Ghana and beyond.
It remains a dark irony of our history that, the very political tradition which conspired to truncate his unparalleled vision on 24th February 1966, is today seeking to revise Ghana's history.
The song "Kwame Nkrumah never dies" has proved true not in the sense of his immortality but in the fact that his name will continue to be written in letters of gold whenever the history of Ghana, Africa and the world is recounted.
It is an indisputable fact that Nkrumah was the critical spark that put Ghana on a high-velocity path to independence. Happy Founder's Day Fellow Ghanaians.

Hehehee..! Did I here john mahama saying Nana addo should not try to rewrite the history of Ghana?. If rewritten of history is not good why did he try to rewrite the history of Bimbilla?. We also have tradition and customary which ingolf each an every persons in the royal families but u were forcing to imposed on us a wrong person(Mr Andani Dasana) because he was ur friend. Keep quite u visionless mahana
What is your political affiliation John Mahama, Is it NDC or CPP? Since when did a person became a founder of a whole Nation? Check from the historical records, whether when Nkrumah arrived from US albeit J. B. Danquah`s facilitation in September 1946, if he had an idea that "Gold Coast" was to become Ghana? Kwame Nkrumah himself was aware that he was not the only person who founded Ghana that was why he gave his honest reason for breaking away from the "UGCC" to form his "CPP" Quote n unquote Nkrumah: "That, his colleagues in the UGCC were too slow towards the fight for independence, hence his breakaway" Meaning, others were already at the forefront for independence.
NO WONDER YOUR OWN NDC COLLEAGUES HAVE DESCRIBED YOU AS HAVING FILM STAR MENTALITY!!!! YOU LACK ANALYTICAL ACUMEN AND YOUR SENSE OF HISTORY IS SKEWED; JUST LIKE A PIN-HEAD SUCH AS KOKU ANYIDOHO!!! DONT YOU HAVE STANDARDS, MAHAMA!!FILM STAR???
when i.d.i.o.t.s. decide to write something against JDM that never exists
Well we need our leaders to stand up to help the youth of this nation instead of fighting over Ghana`s founding, what good will that do us....Paul in the scripture was an Apostle who did the most difficult work of being sent to the gentile that does not make other disciples less important.Nkrumah was bold to bring independence To Ghana and for that he deserve to be commemorated.
Nelson Mandala who was one of the heroes who suffered far more than any of his colleagues could not carry himself as founder of South Africa just because he led the independence. Notwithstanding his compassion and respect for the same white people who brutalized him. Mandela ruled without blood on his hands, a true Africa leader who did not turned South Africa to one party state and also ruled along side the whites. This was what Danquah and co wanted.
It is unfortunate for former president Mahama to drag the names of the patriotic and gallant men who saved Ghana from dictatorship into disrepute by crediting the UP tradition for Nkrumah's overthrow. Mahama should rather be praising them. Their heroic adventure made it possible to become president. Who was Nkrumah's vice presdent? What vision are you talking about Mr. ex-president? Socialism which Nkrumah cherished has collapsed. His industralisation was built on straw without any economic consideration. The liberal democracy, which the UP tradition believed and still believes in has now become a global order of the day. If Ghana and South Korea were on the same economic level at independence and now Ghana is a shadow of its potential while South Korea is rubbing shoulders with global giants then our problem in Ghana is the lack of vision of the first president and his government. This is the bare fact you socialist boys don't want to hear but the truth will be said and it will prevail. Who also told you Mr. ex-president that we need international community to to tell us who the founders of Ghana are? Did Nkrumah credit the source of the name GHANA in his independent speech in 1957? That was plagiarism at its best but Ghanaians missed it!!
God bless you Wise man u will surly be back
Wise Man.
