Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, twice the Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces says former Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe cannot be solely blamed for his country’s woes over the years.
“Mugabe loved his country, he loved his people but the people wanted change. He is not the problem but maybe part of the problem. The people are part of the problem just like what we are facing in Ghana,” he said.
Mugabe resigned as president on Tuesday evening after a week of intense pressure following a military takeover.
Much of that pressure stemmed from Mugabe's decision to remove his vice Mnangagwa, who is seen as close to the Zimbabwean armed forces.
Following Mugabe’s forced resignation, former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president on Friday, according to Zimbabwe's state broadcaster.
Emmerson Mnangagwa has already promised jobs and a stable economy when he is sworn in as a new president after decades of Mugabe’s leadership.
But, Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah was emphatic that Emmerson Mnangagwa will not bring anything new to the people of Zimbabwe.
“Wait and see what will happen to them. They will be like Libya after Gaddafi’s overthrown. Now Mugabe is gone. If the people sit there without doing nothing, their problems will be worse, are they going to change…I don’t think they will,” he said.
Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed ‘Ghana Montie’, the former security capo was unconvinced yet-to-be President Emmerson Mnangagwa will deliver.
“He will do his best but if the people of Zimbabwe don’t support him, he will come up short. Emmerson Mnangagwa was Mugabe’s vice for so many years, why didn’t he help Mugabe to turn things around for the better? So what is he going to do now?” he quizzed.

Guys lets not take the person saying something with a political tag and write off his comment as if it does not make sense .The guy was the vice president of the country and did not help much. What can he do differently now that he is the president of the country. Zimbabwe do not vote a President as we do in Ghana but for a political party. Therefore it was not mugabe rulling but the Zanu PF party for the past years. They intend elected Mugabe to rule. The party is still in power so what will change. Zimbebwe still remains a one party state.
